10 ways to ensure your neighbours won’t hate you
1. DO introduce yourself when the opportunity presents itself.
This sets the tone for a friendly relationship and demonstrates consideration (a trait all good neighbours have in common).
2. DON’T be too noisy.
Your neighbours will bear the brunt of your late-night shenanigans, so keep volume to a minimum when bedtime rolls around.
3. DO inform your neighbours if they can expect possible disturbances.
Things such as construction work and larger parties should be brought to the attention of those in close proximity. You’ll find that in most cases, your neighbours will understand, and will appreciate your courtesy. This could prevent a pesky noise complaint as well.
4. DON’T be nosy.
This means no staring through windows, peeking over hedges, frequently calling over unexpectedly, inviting yourself to barbecues and the like.
5. DO control your pets.
You must remember that not everyone likes little Fido as much as you do. In fact, some people actively dislike animals, so try your best to make sure yours don’t run rampant. You’d be surprised at the amount of disputes that have been caused by an unruly goldfish 😉
6. DON’T be a slob.
If you share a common area with your neighbours, try to keep your outdoor space relatively well maintained (this will please your landlord, too!). Taking care of your residence is simply part of being a responsible tenant.
7. DO send them holiday greetings.
The holiday season presents the perfect opportunity to send a festive card (or invitation!) to your neighbours. Thoughtful acts such as this will help foster a sense of community.
8. DON’T assume your neighbours want to see you naked.
Yes, it might be your home—and yes—all bodies are beautiful in their own way, but close the curtains if you want to avoid a potentially awkward situation. Not everyone—especially not lil’ old Bernadette next-door—values exhibitionism (now Una from across the street is a different story altogether).
9. DO volunteer to help.
Neighbours are in the ideal position to lend a hand should the need arise. Their close location means unparalleled convenience for any last-minute situations. Let your neighbours know you’re willing to be of assistance, and chances are they’ll do the same for you!
10. DON’T disrupt their space.
This should go without saying, but your neighbours’ things—unless permission has been granted—are off-limits! In other words, keep your hands to yourself. It doesn’t matter how beautiful their spring flowers may be; there’s no cheeky picking allowed!
